Dental Implants and the Re-care Hygiene Appointment

Course Description:
Once considered an elective for the privileged few, dental implants are now provided as a routine dental service because of their predictable results and ability to restore function. However, the current US dental hygiene curriculum has limited formal education about dental implant maintenance. Proper home care and frequent professional re-care assessment are essential for patients with dental implants to prevent the progression of mucositis to Periimplantitis and bone loss.
With changing classifications about treatment considerations for peri-implant disease and technological advancements, it is not uncommon for dental hygienists to express uncertainty about patient care.
This program will review peri-implant assessment protocols, identify patient risk factors affecting re-care maintenance protocols, and review decision-making factors leading to maintenance protocols for implant cases ranging from a single tooth to full-arch screw-retained restorations.
Course Objectives:
• Review Peri-implant assessment protocols
• Identify patient risk factors that affect re-care maintenance protocols
• Review the AAP Peri-implant Classifications
• Review implant maintenance protocols for prevention of Peri-implantitis
