TO APPLY: https://forms.hr.duke.edu/careers/external.php?reqid=xxxx33BR GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Duke Innovative Pain Therapies clinic is looking for a NC Dental Assistant (DA II) for our clinic in Brier Creek to work with our certified Orofacial Pain specialist and providers in our multi-specialty pain management practice. Preference will be given to candidates who are already certified by DANB and certification will be required within one year of hire date. The DA II will be working with all the providers in our multidisciplinary practice. At Duke Innovative Pain Therapies, patients are offered advanced non-opioid pain therapies in a personalized environment that allows for optimal comprehensive, collaborative patient care from our specialists, which includes experts in acupuncture and Asian medicine, Pain Management with biologic treatments, Psychology, Neurology, and Orofacial Pain. Duties The DA II may perform any of the duties as outlined by the NC Dental Board. Those functions are allowable under the DAII job classification with direct control and supervision by a licensed dentist. A DA II may perform all duties designated to a DA I under the same level of supervision. 1. Assist in the treatment of patients to include seating patients, providing dentist/physicians/providers with instruments and equipment, chart examination and treatment results on patient’s record. 2. Clean and sterilize instruments utilizing autoclave, assemble instruments, supplies and equipment required for specific procedures. 3. Perform routine maintenance on instruments and equipment (autoclave, Cone Beam CT machine, portable x-ray machine) 3. Preparing and taking alginate impressions, pouring casts from impressions, preparing cast for shipping (trimming, lab prescription), follow up delivery of devices for patient appointment. 5. Perform patient Cone Beam CT scans, prepare and send images to oral radiologist for reading and reporting, process report results for provider to communicate to patient. 6. Perform patient intake reviewing medical history, taking vital signs, medication reconciliation, confirming purpose of visit and learning assessments. 7. Participate in daily huddles with providers and clinical team. 8. Prepping clinics, obtaining test results, updating charts, verifying insurance and authorizations with front desk staff, coordinating referrals and appointments 9. Prepare, gather clinic notes, and obtain consent forms and instructions as per medical providers’ request, label patient documents and scan into Maestro. 10. Return patient phone calls/messages and check in baskets daily. 11. Clean clinic exam rooms per practice protocol, proper disposal of sharps containers and biohazard waste. 12. Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; restocking of injectable drugs. 13. Perform checks/maintain clinic logs (for equipment/supplies, refrigerators, running controls, autoclave). 14. Assist with onboarding of new staff. 15. Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein. To be classified as a Dental Assistant II, an assistant shall meet one of the following criteria: (1) Completion of: a. An ADA-accredited dental assisting program and current certification in CPR; or b. One academic year or longer in an ADA-accredited dental hygiene program, and current certification in CPR; or (2) Completion of Dental Assistant certification examination(s) administered by the Dental Assisting National Board and current certification in CPR; or (3) Completion of: a. A 3-hour course in sterilization and infection control; b. A 3-hour course in dental office emergencies; and c. Current certification in CPR d. After completing Sub-Items (3)b., c. and d. of this Rule, dental assistants may be trained in any dental delivery setting and allowed to perform the functions of a Dental Assistant II under the direct control and supervision of a licensed dentist, expect as listed in Sub-Item (3)e. of this Rule. e. Dental assistants may take radiographs after completing radiology training consistent with G.S. 90-29(c)(12). f. Full-time employment and experience as a chairside assistant for two years (3,xxx hours) of the preceding five, during which period the assistant may be trained in any dental delivery setting and allowed to perform the functions of a Dental Assistant II under the direct control and supervision of a licensed dentist. Radiography Requirements A certified dental assistant [(one who successfully completes the DANB exam (see (3) above)] or an assistant who completes an ADA-accredited dental assisting or dental hygiene program may take radiographs without further examination. All others, including those who move to North Carolina from out-or-state, must successfully pass an equivalency exam. This exam may be challenged after completing “seven hours of instruction in the production and use of dental x- rays and an education program of not less than seven hours in clinical dental radiology.” You must be able to prove that you have the minimal amount of training to be eligible to take the radiology equivalency exam, or you may take a course prior to taking the exam. Any Board approved radiography course is acceptable and any approved course’s final examination is recognized as the equivalency exam. To qualify to monitor patients under nitrous oxide, a DA II must: (1) Successfully complete a North Carolina Board-approved seven-hour course in nitrous oxide-oxygen conscious sedation. WORKING CONDITIONS Must be able to work under time pressures in a busy clinic/office environment. Must be present on site for 8 hour shifts during standard business hours. Must participate in group activities requiring interpersonal skills & cooperation. Must work as late person when scheduled or according to business needs Must be able to react quickly and immediately respond to emergencies. Must be able to handle multiple assignments, conflicting demands & priorities.Must travel between locations on needed basis.
