Job Description In the dental office, the dentist and the dental hygienist work together to meet the oral health needs of patients. Some of the services provided by dental hygienists may include: • patient screening procedures; such as assessment of oral health conditions, review of the health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck inspection, full dental charting and taking vitals • present findings and new treatment needs to dentist during appointments • assist dentist in a variety of treatment procedures • taking and developing dental radiographs with sensors including but not limited to full mouth series • removing calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of the teeth including scaling and root planing • applying preventive materials to the teeth (e.g., sealants and fluorides) • teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health; (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling) • counseling patients about good nutrition and its impact on oral health • taking impressions of patients' teeth for study models and future treatment needs • preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment • performing documentation and office management activities • assisting in supply management Dental Hygienist Minimum Requirements: • Active Alabama Dental Hygiene License • Experience using computers for a variety of dental tasks • Good written and verbal communication skills • Consistently professional appearance and attitude • Able to provide great patient care Dental Hygienist Preferred Requirements: • 3 years experience as a licensed Dental Hygienist • Experience with practice management software This is not necessarily an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, skills, efforts, requirements or working conditions associated with the job.
