Job Title: Certified Dental Assistant Department: Health Centers, Community and School Based Supervisor: VP of Clinical Quality FLSA Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt The duties of a Dental Assistant are among the most comprehensive and varied in the dental office. The Dental Assistant performs many tasks requiring both interpersonal and technical skills. The Dental Assistant will help with preparing patients, sterilizing instruments, setting up rooms, and some dental hygiene tasks. This position reports to the VP of Clinical Quality, with the guidance of the Dental Director. Areas of Responsibility Patient Care and interaction: • Preparing the patients for dental work and helping patient feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment • Assisting the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures • Taking dental x-rays and caring for dental x-ray equipment and other dental equipment • Assisting dentist in managing medical and dental emergencies when necessary • Providing patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling) • Providing great patient care in all dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and oral surgery • Serving as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocol and preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment for each visit • Assisting dental hygienists with procedures when necessary • Fabrication temporary registrations and custom impression from preliminary impressions • Giving patients information on dental hygiene, oral health care, and plaque control and teaching patient’s appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health; (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling) Reporting and Clerical: • Asking about the patient’s medical history and taking blood pressure, pulse and temperature and recording them accurately in the electronic medical record system. • Performs clerical functions, including but not limited to recording health information, insurance verification/eligibility, pre-authorizations, and appointment scheduling and missed notices. • Ensures appropriate documentation/clinical administrative functions by adhering to HIPAA, Whitefoord and other health care policies as it relates to the patient’s safety. • Ordering dental supplies and maintaining dental equipment inventory as needed Skills and Responsibilities: • High school diploma or equivalent • Certification or associated degree in an accredited Dental Assistance program • Unrestricted license to practice Dental Assisting in the State of Georgia • Current CPR certification required • X-Ray Certification • Consistently professional appearance and attitude • Results driven and detailed oriented with passion for learning • Excellent written and verbal communication; Proficient at record keeping and reporting • Skilled at working with multi-disciplinary teams and competent in working with diverse customer groups • Perform duties according to established policies of the Health Center, as well as national Health guidelines and policies. • Periodically travel between practices. • Periodically attend meetings hosted by other agencies (where applicable).
