hiring red and green flags

Have you reached the point where you are considering venturing out on a job search? In today’s competitive job market, it is absolutely essential to maintain a vigilant and discerning approach when evaluating dental job opportunities. Perhaps you’re a recent graduate entering the dental field for the first time or a seasoned hygienist who needs a change. Regardless of your situation, there are some key “red flags” you must keep an eye out for in the job posts you come across… and some “green flags” too!

Remember that job postings are just the first step in evaluating a potential employer. It’s important to conduct your research, ask questions during interviews, and, if possible, speak with current or former employees to get a complete picture of the workplace culture and conditions.

First, let’s start with some “green flags” to look for in a good job post…

3 “Green Flags” To Look For In A Dental Job Post

When searching for a new dental job, it can be challenging to identify the right fit for your skills and aspirations. However, by paying close attention to the presence of positive indicators, commonly known as green flags, you can easily navigate through dental job postings with confidence and clarity. The following 3 “green flags,” can streamline your job search process and increase your chances of finding a fulfilling dental position. Remember, a job posting is not just about the position itself; it also reflects the values and culture of the organization.

#1: “Our commitment is to grow and develop our team members.”

With “burnout” being the buzzword these days, it’s important to look for signs that the dental practice values professional growth and invests in the development of its team members. Phrases such as “career advancement,” “continuing education opportunities,” or “mentorship programs” will indicate a practice willing to invest in you, and can help reduce the risk of feeling stagnant in your career.

#2: “We’re looking for more than a [calculus remover…]”

This comment suggests that the office is seeking someone who possesses skills and qualities beyond just the basic qualifications. It indicates that dental candidates are viewed as true healthcare professionals, bringing more to the team than just powerful wrist rocking. Additionally, a well-written posting will provide you with a detailed overview of the responsibilities, requirements, and expectations for the role. This transparency ensures that you can assess whether the position aligns with your expertise and career goals.

#3: “We value work/life balance.”

This statement is crucial in our post-pandemic world. It shows the importance of the employees’ well-being and acknowledges the need for a healthy balance between work and personal life. A positive work environment is crucial for long-term job satisfaction. Additionally, a strong job posting will highlight a supportive team culture and employee benefits. Check for other phrases like “collaborative team,” “flexible scheduling,” or “competitive compensation package”. Of course, follow-up questions are needed at the interview to get more specific details, but this is a great start!

And now for some “red flags” to look for in your job search…

3 “Red Flags” To Look For In A Dental Job Post

Each opportunity may seem promising at first glance, but it’s crucial to look for any potential red flags that could indicate a less-than-ideal work environment or questionable practices. By carefully analyzing every job posting you come across, you can ensure that you make informed decisions and choose the best path for your career growth. Remember, a thorough evaluation is key to finding the perfect job opportunity that aligns with your goals and values. The following are 3 “red flags” you should look for in dental job postings.

#1: “If you have a steady hand, we want to meet you.”

Let’s bring this back to the fact that we are all licensed. We have all passed numerous board exams including a clinical portion. Putting this statement in a job post would be an immediate turn-off as it may indicate micromanaging of your technical skills. Also, if a job posting fails to provide a comprehensive outline of the specific responsibilities and tasks associated with the role, it could be a red flag. A clear understanding of expectations is necessary to determine if the position aligns with your skills and interests.

#2: “SMILE AND BE IN A GOOD MOOD.”

The all caps is what got me. Let’s be honest, life can throw us curveballs, and being in a constant state of happiness isn’t always realistic! Employers need to understand that while a positive attitude is valuable, it’s equally essential to acknowledge the complexities of life.

Be cautious of job postings that have other unrealistic qualities. If the position promises unrealistic salary figures, rapid career advancement, or an excessive number of benefits without any clear justification, it could be a red flag. It’s important to have realistic expectations and ensure that the job offer aligns with industry standards.

#3: “Run on schedule for all appointments.”

No one walks into work each day hoping to run behind in their schedule. Dental professionals need sufficient time for each appointment to provide thorough care and build rapport with patients. My questions for this employer would be to find out how much time is being allotted to each appointment type. Remember, it takes a team effort to ensure that the schedule runs smoothly each day.

Pro tip: Researching the dental practice before applying can answer any underlying questions you have after reading a job description. If you come across negative reviews, complaints about unethical practices, or a general poor reputation, it should raise concerns.

Taking the Next Step

While the job post is the beginning step in the job search, keep in mind that the most effective way to discern a red or green flag is through a thorough interview as well as a working interview. Words can be skillfully crafted in a job posting or eloquently spoken during an interview. But, it’s only when fully immersed in the office’s atmosphere that you gain genuine insight into how they truly operate. Consider temping before committing to a dental practice. Not only will you make extra money, but doing so will give you the best feel of the practice. Remember, it’s not just about finding any job; it’s about finding the right job!
