Dental Patient Eye Safety, Evaluating Biological and Physical Hazards in Clinical Practice
Apr 29, 2026

Details
This presentation focuses on an often-overlooked yet critical aspect of dental care: patient eye safety.
While we’re all trained to prioritize eye protection for ourselves, it’s equally essential to recognize the risks our patients face, both biological, like splatter from saliva and blood, and physical, such as accidental contact with instruments, various debris, projectiles, or materials.
This presentation will walk through the real hazards in the operatory, evaluate current standards, and explore how we can improve eye protection for our patients, especially in areas such as the bottom gap of eyewear. Ultimately, our goal is simple: Prevent injury. Protect vision. And promote safety with every patient encounter.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Identify and evaluate the biological and physical hazards that pose risks to dental patient eye safety during routine and advanced clinical procedures.
- Understand the limitations of traditional protective eyewear for patients, with a focus on the bottom gap as a critical area of vulnerability.
- Apply strategies and best practices to integrate enhanced patient eye safety.
