CE course titled “From Tension to Tranquility,” is specifically tailored to dental hygienists, focusing on the unique role they play in identifying and managing TMJ discomfort that may arise during or after prolonged dental procedures such as deep cleanings.

This evidence-based course equips California dental hygienists with practical clinical strategies to recognize signs of TMJ pain and dysfunction—often before patients voice any complaints. It highlights the ways in which common hygiene procedures, such as prophylaxis, periodontal therapy, or extended appointments, may contribute to or exacerbate TMJ and cervical discomfort. Participants will learn how to implement noninvasive, supportive techniques including patient-centered communication, Kinesio Taping®, basic manual therapy applications, and targeted home care education to enhance comfort and recovery.

Course Objectives:

  • After this course, attendees will be able to:
  • Recognize early signs of TMJ discomfort related to prolonged mouth opening, neck strain, or intraoral instrumentation during hygiene procedures, and understand the clinical impact on patient well-being.
  • Gain clinical strategies for identifying TMJ dysfunction before symptoms are reported by the patient.
  • Understand the mechanisms by which dental hygiene procedures may contribute to TMJD symptoms and cervical pain.
  • Enhance communication skills to assess patient tolerance and promote trust and informed care planning.
  • Introduce and educate patients on safe, non-invasive techniques—such as external Kinesio Tape® application to the TMJ and cervical areas, ergonomic posture advice, and post-care instructions—to reduce inflammation, muscle spasm, and discomfort.
  • Deliver actionable home care guidance that promotes healing and minimizes postprocedural TMJ complaints.
  • Promote a multidisciplinary approach for managing TMJ, neck pain, and headaches to improve overall patient satisfaction and referral outcomes.
