We are adding an associate, so we need to add Dental Assistants for a busy office in the Western Branch area of Chesapeake, VA. ABOUT US: We are friendly, support each other, and work as a team in a laid-back atmosphere. We have digital x-rays and 8 rooms---3 hygiene rooms, 4 doctor chairs, and 1 overflow room. We are a 2 doctors practice. The owner, Dr. Edenfield, is fast paced but easy going and fun to work with. You will learn a lot of random facts, especially about food and music! He has another practice in Tennessee so he is only here every other week. Dr. Boyd, our associate, is also laid back and easy to work with; and works Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays only. We are open Monday through Thursday. You will be starting your shift at 7:30am and working until about 5 pm-sometimes we get out a little early and sometimes a little late! We also have an hour for lunch from 12:00 pm-1:00 pm. We have a fridge, microwave, and Keurig coffee maker. We mostly do composite fillings, extractions, crowns and build ups, some root canals, and occasional partials/dentures. We have digital X-rays and a digital impression scanner. Very rarely, we run an assisted hygiene schedule. We use Softdent as our dental software. If you have not used this, it is fairly easy to learn and we will be happy to teach you. Position Title: Dental Assistant Reports To: Practice Dentist, Associate Dentist, Office Manager or Team Leader, as assigned Status: Non-exempt, Regular, “At-will” Work Status, Full-time POSITION SUMMARY Under direct and indirect supervision, the dental assistant will assist the Dentist or Hygienist in both administrative and clinical duties including: prepare patient for procedure or exam, sterilize and disinfect instruments, set up instrument trays, prepare materials, and assist during dental procedures. This position will provide patient and practice support services, including, but not limited to, personal assistance, medical attention, and emotional support. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS *Standing 80%. *Sitting 20%. *Moderate noise levels from dental and other lab equipment. *Medical, Dental, office, and lab setting. *Minimum moving requirements of 35 pounds in order to transfer equipment and pack and unpack supplies. *Frequent bending, twisting, and position changes in order to examine and service patients. *Exceptional hand eye coordination and control in order to use dental implements for exams, to provide dentist assistance, and mix and/or place materials on dental tools, products, and in patients’ mouths. *Frequent client and interoffice personnel interaction as this position is chair-side to dentist and heavily dependent on excellent customer interaction. *Exceptional typing skills to work with standard Eaglesoft software program provided. * Hearing – Must have good hearing/listening skills and be able to wear headset earpiece for interoffice communication and comfortably communicate with patients and other staff members by headset earpiece and in person. *Near Vision—the ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer) as required for mixing and placing materials on tools and in mouths. *Potential occupational exposure to trace amounts of nitrous oxide and/or x-rays. RESPONSIBILITIES *Assist with dental and medical emergencies according to OSHA and office procedures. *Maintain CPR certification. *Assist chair side during administration of nitrous oxide. *Instruct patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs. *Make preliminary impressions for study casts and occlusal registrations for mounting study casts. *Clean and polish removable appliances. *Perform intraoral coronal polishing under direct supervision of Dental Hygienist or Dentists. *Take and record medical and dental histories and vital signs of patients. *Record treatment information in patient records. *Expose dental diagnostic x-rays. *Actively provide hand instruments and materials as needed to Dentist or Hygienist during exams and procedures in order to help maintain patient comfort and Hygienist or Dentist’s efficiency. *Using and maintaining hazard control protocols as established by OSHA and office standards. *Must always represent the practice in a professional, pleasant, and cooperative manner. *Maintain regular attendance and adhere to assigned work schedule and office policies. *Must be able to comfortably and efficiently handle multiple deadlines and task assignments. *Must be able to work both independently and cooperatively in team settings. *Occasionally there may be some travel, by car or plane, required in order to participate in continuing education or seminars. *Perform routine equipment maintenance and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed. *Other duties and tasks, as assigned periodically. REQUIREMENTS *Must have a minimum of 2 years current Dental Assisting Experience *Must have a valid certificate to expose dental X-Rays in the state of Virginia. *Must be able to keyboard blind touch type 35-40 WPM with accuracy. *Must be able to work two evenings until 6:00pm *Always maintain the highest level of confidentiality to HIPAA standards. *Adhere to strict safety guidelines and procedures to OSHA and office standards. *Adhere to office policy and procedures when discussing co-payments. *Must be comfortable seeing and able to maintain a professional demeanor and attitude while working around blood and unpleasant smells. *Must be detail oriented, work efficiently in small spaces and maintain patient comfort. *Must be flexible and understand that job duties may change from time to time and that you may be asked to assist in other areas of the office. *Must excel in forward thinking and anticipate the needs of the doctor as well as the patient. *Must demonstrate active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. *Must demonstrate good reading comprehension by understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents. *Must demonstrate excellent communication skills by talking to others to convey information effectively.
