Dental Hygienist Administer oral hygiene care to patients. Assess patient oral hygiene problems or needs and maintain health records. Advise patients on oral health maintenance and disease prevention. May provide advanced care such as providing fluoride treatment or administering topical anesthesia. Reported job titles: Hygienist; Dental Hygienist; Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Review and record patient medical history; update as necessary. • Complete dental prophylaxis to include but not limited to the following: o Clean calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth and beneath margins of gums, using dental instruments. o Examine gums, using probes, to locate periodontal recessed gums and signs of gum disease. o Feel and visually examine gums for sores and signs of disease. o Feel lymph nodes under patients chin to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate presence of oral cancer. • Administer local anesthetic agents; when needed. • Remove excess cement from coronal surfaces of teeth. • Perform periodontal scaling and root planning after proper diagnosis. • Take x-rays utilizing digital x-ray equipment. • Provide clinical services or health education to improve and maintain the oral health of patients (or the general public) including but not limited to: proper dental care and maintenance, fluoride, post-operative instructions. • Apply fluorides or other cavity preventing agents to arrest dental decay. • Effectively communicate findings of oral exam to dentist. • Chart conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by dentist. • Maintain patient recall system. • Maintain dental equipment and sharpen and sterilize dental instruments, stock treatment rooms as necessary. • Conduct dental health clinics for community groups to augment services of dentist. Knowledge: • Medicine and Dentistry — Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures. Minimum Associate’s Degree in Dental Hygiene • Customer and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. English Language — Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Education and Training — Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects. Current CPR certification. Current State of Ohio License. Abilities: • Near Vision — Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). • Finger Dexterity — Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects • Arm-Hand Steadiness — Ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position. • Control Precision — Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions. • Manual Dexterity — Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. Physical Requirements/Work Environment: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with arms and hands. The position involves sitting, standing, walking, bending or twisting. This position is indoors; environmentally controlled. The employee is potentially exposed to disease or infections, contaminants and radiation. The employee may find the noise levels can be distracting or uncomfortable at times. Additional Notes: Employee must be available during all hours of business operations, currently: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 7:30am to 5:00pm and Tuesday and Thursday 6:30am to 8pm.
