Description: Lead dental assistants work with other dental assistants and team members in the dental practice. They are expected to handle the same usual and customary duties performed by any other dental assistants in the practice, but also handle supervisory and administrative tasks as well. This Job Description identifies the major responsibilities of this position. It does not include all aspects of this position such as potential duties assigned by supervisors and requirements for flexibility. The Lead Dental Assistant is responsible for the development of the other DAs in the office. Dental Assistant Lead Duties Management of Clinical Forms -Ensure that each operatory has the proper clinical forms and that they are up to date and good quality copies. Supply Ordering -Maintain and order dental supplies monthly and as needed with Management’s approval and within general supply budget Clinical Support -Work with Dr’s, other dental assistants and hygienists in the clinic to ensure efficient patient flow according to the schedule demands and walk-ins. They are to act as “traffic control” of patient flow and assist the Dr’s in guiding them to ensure proper flow in the clinic. -Ensure that all lab cases are ready and pulled for the following day schedule. -Assist in the efficient transition of new Dr’s and/or dental assistants to ensure better acclamation to the office. -Ensure proper dental assistant coverage in the office on specialist days and/or to cover vacations. -Keep the dentist(s) and clinical team members informed of appointment changes, overruns and patients in the waiting room Team Work -The Lead Dental Assistant should ensure that the back office runs smoothly. Patient hand-offs should be professional and should ultimately create an excellent patient experience. -Lead by example and look to build efficiency in regular patient flow. -Monitor and prioritize workflow of the dental assistants. -Train new assistant hires and demonstrate standard operating procedures within the practice -Intermediary for dentists and dental assistants to delineate and clarify feedback from both parties to help maintain communication -Report any issues with clinical or front office staff related to SOP to the doctor or practice administrator so they may be addressed promptly Maintenance Issues -Lead assistant is to be responsible for the maintenance of emergency kits and first aid supplies in the office to ensure that they are stocked properly and up to date. -Properly follow our maintenance schedule for the processor, autoclave, compressor etc. on a weekly basis and schedule coverage accordingly to allow the time to do this. -Identify, report and follow up as necessary on any maintenance issues in the office including dental equipment, hand pieces, hand piece log. -Ensure that MSDS sheets are up to date. Compliance Issues -Lead assistant is to ensure that the clinical staff is following OSHA regulations and safety requirements. Additionally, they need to ensure that the clinical staff is compliant with HIPPA guidelines and take corrective action with the support of management if necessary. Dental Assistant Regular Duties -Prepare for morning huddles by looking through the next day’s schedule and patient charts and notify teams of things that need to be addressed. (i.e. proper procedures on appointments, proper length of appointments, proper providers attached to appointments, unscheduled treatment, pre-medication, etc.) -Assist dentist(s) during dental treatment procedures. -Assist dentist(s) with typical procedures such as taking and developing X-rays, charting, intra oral photos, and assisting with any other clinical procedures up to their legal ability. -Assisting with setup, breakdown, maintenance, clean-up, proper sterilization or other preparation of rooms and equipment and instruments daily
