Dental Hygienist duties revolve around conducting initial client screenings, cleaning teeth (e.g. removing plaque), and advising clients on oral health and preventative care. Hygienists help Dentists decide treatments for teeth or gum diseases and handle dental emergencies. The Hygienist must be reliable and able to build trust with clients as well as have a deep knowledge of relevant health and safety rules and a good eye for oral diseases and anomalies. Summary of General Duties: Ensures patients feel as comfortable as possible before their examination Sterilize dental instruments properly Conducts initial mouth screenings and checks medical and oral health history Identifies conditions like gingivitis or periodontitis Cleans and helps protect clients’ teeth (e.g. remove plaque or apply fluoride) Educates clients on proper tooth and gum care (by demonstrating, for example, good brushing techniques) Gives instructions to clients after dental procedures Imaging, Digital Radiography and dental impressions Assists Dentists with selecting appropriate treatments for various diseases Maintains documentation and charts on each client Monitors supplies and coordinates re-ordering as needed Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Experienced in working with culturally diverse populations Must have great communication skills, (writing, spelling, listening, and speaking) and interpersonal skills Must have strong computer and database system skills, and have a positive, friendly, and helpful demeanor Outstanding communication skills Must have excellent customer service skills and a warm personality Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and pay attention to detail Proven experience as Dental Hygienist In-depth knowledge of health and safety regulations in this profession (e.g. HIPAA) Experience in preparing and maintaining dental equipment Education and Experience: A minimum of three years of Dental Hygiene experience is preferred. State of Georgia Dental Hygiene License is also required. Dentrix experience is preferred. Previous experience with HIV and/or Infectious Diseases is also preferred.
